With the success of Operation "Merkur", the Fallschirmtruppe had confirmed its reputation as a truly elite fighting force. Since the Fallschirmjager were members of the Luftwaffe, they wore its uniform and insignia, however they were provided with special jump/combat clothing that made their identification unmistakable. Unfortunately for the Crete operation, lightweight hot weather clothing wasn't available. The victors of the battle were quick to make use of captured British tropical uniforms.

The price paid by both Allied and German forces was high. The Luftwaffe had 350 aircraft damaged or destroyed and casualties ran as high as 6000. It was decided that the cost was too high and the Fallschirmjager would never again mount an airborne attack in this scale.
