Due
to the unusual nature of their missions, MACV-SOG personnel were given unprecedented
latitude in their choice of uniform and equipment. In most cases, the optimum
goal was simply to be invisible -- to blend in as much as possible, both with
the environment and with the indiginous Vietnamese. Locally-made black jungle
fatigues were an ideal solution for some MACV-SOG, affording them maximum camouflage
during night operations and the general appearance of black-clad Vietnamese
villagers to the casual observer during the day.
