Hawaiian
Airlines placed an order for 13 Boeing 717-200 aircraft on March 2, 2000. These
technologically advanced airliners will begin to replace Hawaiian Airlines ageing
DC-9-50 aircraft for inter-island service. The Boeing 717-200 has garnered support
from carriers all over the world, and is an ideal replacement for DC-9 and 737
aircraft.
Final
assembly of Hawaiian Airlines first Boeing 717-200 to enter service (N475HA)
began a short seven months later in October of 2000, with the first scheduled
service on March 15, 2001. The Boeing 717-200 marks the introduction of Hawaiian
Airlines new livery which centers around Pualani ("Flower of the Sky") and this
symbol has been featured in the Hawaiian corporate identity since 1973. Hawaiian
Airlines new color scheme and identity will not be applied to aircraft in current
use (DC-9-50, DC-10-10, DC-10-30) which are all scheduled for replacement with
Boeing 717-200 and Boeing 767-300ER aircraft.
