Federal Express (FedEx) took a chance and added four used DC-10-10F conversion aircraft in the early 1980s. After proving to be a succesful integration, Federal Express continued to add the widebody aircraft to its' fleet of planes. The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) DC-10-30F Freighter version was launched by Federal Express (FedEx) in May 1984. First delivery was made Jan. 24, 1986. This pure freighter version will carry palletized payloads of up to 175,000 pounds.
Federal Express is not only the fastest growing and largest overnight package carrier, but maintains the largest fleet of DC-10s in the world with over 100 examples (both DC-10-10 and the DC-10-30). Many of these DC-10s are scheduled to be upgraded to MD-10 status after conversion work has completed. Additionally, Federal Express operates the worlds largest fleet of McDonnell Douglas MD-11s, Boeing 727 series, and the Airbus A310s.
Today we present the McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30F in 1/400 scale. This is just one of the many FedEx aircraft that Dragon will be adding to the 1/400 series of planes.
