In 1983, American Airlines introduced the first MD-82 series of aircraft into its fleet. The aircraft was deemed a stellar performer, and because American Airlines was in the market for an narrow body upgrade, Boeing and McDonnell Douglas entered into a vicious battle to land a large order for a fleet upgrade from American Airlines. McDonnell Douglas offered terms that were unheard of (walk a way leases) and thus American Airlines placed the largest single order for aircraft in U.S. history. In 1984, American Airlines ordered 67 MD-82s plus options on an additional 100 aircraft.
Such was the performance and reliability of the MD-82 that American Airlines continued to add to its stable of planes. Today, American Airlines is the largest MD-80 series operator in the world, with 275 aircraft in service (prior to the acquisition of TWA). These aircraft are slowly being replaced with more advanced and fuel efficient Boeing 737-800 Next Generation Aircraft.
Dragon Models is proud to present the first 1/400 MD-82 series in American Airlines current livery. This release will be offered in both chrome and Metal Magic.
