Four
years after the war in Europe began, two years after the sound of German bootheels
over Russian roads shattered the Hitler-Stalin Pact, five months after the disaster
of Stalingrad ... there was Kursk.
Two
mighty forces massed around the village of Prohorovka in July 1943 -- nine German
divisions on the offensive, an entire Soviet tank army poised to defend. Over
7000 armored vehicles in a single battle ... one tank every 20 meters.
The
Germans pressed the attack on July 5, the Soviets responded in force -- this
was not the Red Army of 1941. Before the day was through, Germany had lost
586 tanks ... and abandoned 300 more when the battle ended three days later.
56,000 Germans lay dead, over 178,000 casualties for the victorious Russians.
It
was the greatest tank battle in history ... and when it was finished, the
back of Hitler's Panzerkorps was broken forever.
