my M38 Gasmask Canister has a new cloth strap -- I have noticed some comrades
with elastic straps, but I prefer cloth.
My
M31 Mess Kit has seen better days, I admit, but it is clean inside and has a
new leather strap ... do you notice it is also a different color than the Heer
mess kits?

Perhaps that is because it is Luftwaffe issue ... or else the Heer soldiers
don't wash theirs thoroughly after they've eaten!
