The
101st Airborne Division was formed in 1942 when the 82nd Infantry Division was
split in two forming two new airborne divisions. After intense training at Fort
Bragg, the 101st shipped out to England in September of 1943. By that time the
82nd Airborne had already seen action in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. The
"Screaming Eagles" would soon get to prove themselves!
Pathfinders
of the 101st Airborne Division were among the first Allied troops to land on
the continent prior to the Normandy invasion, parachuting in darkness on June
5, 1944 to mark drop zones for the waves of airborne troops to follow.
