The 502nd PIR was tasked with securing the two northern causeways behind Utah and the destruction of German artillery positions. The 506th was responsible for the two southern causeways and the capture of two bridges across the Douve River near Carentan. The 501st PIR was to capture St. Come du Mont, seize the LaBarquette Lock on the Douve River and destroy a bridge over that same river. The division was to seize Carentan when it was thought possible.
