In
1944, Europe faced one of its coldest winters in the 20th century. To soldiers
engaged in war, the proper equipment often meant the difference between life
and death. Christian's Heer-issue skis and ski poles were suited for both downhill
and cross-country use. On difficult and snow-covered terrain where his skis
and hob-nailed Gebirgsjäger boots were of no use, he also had his trusty snowshoes
to help him and his comrades maintain their legendary Jäger mobility.
