Eastern Airlines A300b4

EASTERN AIR LINES A300B4

In 1927, Pitcairn Aviation was founded, flying the postal run from New York to Atlanta. From 1 May 1928 a route licence was also granted for postal service between Atlanta and Miami. North American Aviation Corporation took over Pitcairn in 1929 as their eastern division....this was to become known as Eastern Air Lines from 1930. Several smaller airline companies were taken over in the 30's and 40's. North American Aviation sold out in 1938 to Eddie Rickenbacker, who was president of Eastern Air Lines for many years. Steady growth was attained through the 50's and 60's, until Oct 1970 when the Boeing 747s became the first widebodies to join the expanding fleet. The 747s were sold in 1972, as the first Tristars came into the fleet. These were considered more ideal for Eastern's route structure. The airline grew to become the third largest in the United States serving 120 cities both domestically and internationally. Following deregulation, Eastern headed into increasing financial difficulties. Losses mounted. Recovery measures were introduced. It was around this time too that Eastern introduced the Airbus A300s.....up to 34 were operated. In 1989, the company sought protection from bankruptcy under Chapter 11, and eventually ceased operations in January 1991. The A300s were significant in the Eastern fleet build-up particularly in the latter years. For Eastern fans, this one is for you.
